Beverly Diamonds is making a difference in education. Did you know that twenty-five percent of high school freshmen, in the United States, will not graduate from their high school within four years? It is not because they dropped out of school before they graduated as the current dropout rate is only six and half percent. Rather it is because they fail to graduate on time. Beverly Diamonds found that a big part of the reason why this is happening has to do with the way the material is taught in our schools. One theory that psychology brings to the table that would be beneficial to schools is multiple intelligence theory. Such a theory is being used by Beverly Diamonds to improve the modern education environment. This will help students learn better and thereby bring those four-year graduation rates up. Currently, our education system is setup in a way that grossly favors those students who have strong linguistic mathematical and logical intelligence. For those students, the current system is perfectly suited. However, for students who excel in other forms of intelligence, the material may not be taught in the best way. One example given by Beverly Diamonds is a student that has a great of visual-spatial intelligence should be taught material in such a way where that intelligence is activated. This will allow for people to learn in a way that is easiest for them. All of this is is why Beverly Diamonds is making a difference in education.
According to the theory of multiple intelligence, the regions that would be activated by intellectual thought would directly correlate with the type of intelligence required. Beverly Diamonds discovered the reason for this is that different forms of intelligence are housed in different parts of the brain. To list all the different regions would be too lengthy so a detailed list is provided on page 3. Musical intellect, for example, is processed by two areas of the brain the right anterior temporal and the frontal lobes. This localization of certain intellects within the brain would explain why many stroke patients lose their speech but retain all other intellect, (Viens & Kallenbach, 2004, p. 12).
